Deep fakes in Australian schools

GUEST OPINION: This week’s inquiry into the use of Deep Fakes in Australian schools, combined with the increasing use of Deep Fakes by political figures both in Australia and abroad, are worrisome developments. It signals we are in a rapidly evolving arms race to research and develop effective and reliable deep fake detection tools.

While this cutting-edge technology is undeniably impressive, it's also a potential Pandora’s box brimming with security, fraud, reputation, and misinformation risks.

AI's ability to create lifelike images has opened a gateway to creative opportunities—marketing, entertainment, virtual reality, etc. But when the lines between reality and fiction blur, so do the ethics and security implications.

In the hands of cybercriminals, such technology could lead to serious breaches of privacy and identity fraud. For example, an AI-generated image could be used to fabricate identification documents, access accounts, or impersonate you in online communications. When this is being used at Govenrment level, it makes the risks even greater.

This potential misuse also extends into the realm of corporate espionage. Phishing attacks could become even more convincing, leveraging AI-generated images to trick employees into divulging sensitive information. Reputation is a fragile thing, and where an image is worth a thousand words, it’s terrifyingly easy to imagine the damage a fabricated picture could cause.

With AI-generated images, anyone could find themselves the subject of disinformation campaigns, which might malign their character or professional reputation. Public figures and celebrities are natural targets, but no one is immune. We've seen examples where even poorly edited photos which clearly appear fake are circulated, it has a huge impact on the reputation of individuals. The speed at which misinformation travels means that by the time the truth comes to light, the damage is often already done.

It’s easy to get caught up in the doom and gloom, but we’re not entirely powerless against these risks.

Here are some strategies for mitigating the adverse effects of AI-generated images:

1. Enhanced Detection Tools: Developing sophisticated algorithms that can detect AI-generated images is crucial. These tools can analyse inconsistencies or artefacts that often escape the human eye, providing a line of defence against fraudulent imagery.

2. Awareness and Training: Education is a powerful tool. By raising awareness about the existence and potential misuse of AI-generated images, we can foster a more sceptical public, one less likely to fall prey to deception. Schools, political institutions and businesses should be looking to include deep fake education as part of their cyber awareness training.

3. Stronger Verification Processes: Implementation of more stringent verification methods for identity and information authenticity can help counteract the rise of fraudulent images. This might include multi-factor authentication that leverages elements difficult for AI to replicate accurately.

4. Legal Measures: Legislation must keep pace with technological advancements. Creating and enforcing laws that penalise the malicious use of AI-generated images can serve as a deterrent and provide recourse for victims.”
