Veeam Data Cloud will enable organisations to enjoy total data residency in New Zealand, backing up Microsoft 365 data and select Microsoft cloud native workloads on local shores
COMPANY NEWS: : Veeam, the global market leader in data resilience, has today announced it will be making its Veeam Data Cloud product available to customers of the new Microsoft hyperscale cloud region.
The commitment to local data residency is well timed given the two companies’ global announcement in March of an extended partnership to co-innovate on AI solutions for data protection and ransomware recovery.
Under the new agreement, Veeam Data Cloud customers will have the choice to back up their data entirely on New Zealand’s shores for the first time. Previously, organisations with strict data residency requirements have been unable to leverage the benefits of public cloud given data is often backed up offshore. Having data both stored and backed up in New Zealand, with the added option to consume it via an as a Service model, is a huge benefit for such organisations, from banks to government departments and iwi.
“We consistently hear from organisations in New Zealand that having their critical data stored onshore is hugely important,” says Gary Mitchell, Vice President of Veeam ANZ. “With the new Microsoft cloud region launching, we’ll be able to offer those organisations the world’s top backup product while ensuring data residency in Aotearoa.

“Our most recent Data Protection Trends Report showed that businesses across the Asia Pacific region have a concerning lack of cyber preparedness, with two in five servers unable to come back online in time during a disaster test. Bringing Veeam Data Cloud to New Zealand will allow many local organisations to improve their data resilience even as the volume of cyber incidents continues to rise.”
Take-up of Veeam Data Cloud in ANZ has been growing rapidly, with Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft 365 data onboarding 10 new customers a week on average, and protecting more than 96,000 users to date. Having a presence in Microsoft’s New Zealand cloud region will enable Veaam to grow its local business significantly as it meets strong demand for SaaS and data resilience from New Zealand customers.
One organisation which will benefit from the shift is Hato Hone St John. “With four physical datacentres across Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, and over 7,000 active Microsoft 365 users, we’ve relied on Veeam and their partners to provide the data resilience essential for our operations. As we continue to expand our coverage across the Microsoft suite on Veeam Data Cloud, this new cloud region offers us enhanced options for availability, scalability, and improved data sovereignty, ensuring National Technology Infrastructure Manager Andrew Fletcher. Vanessa Sorenson, Managing Director of Microsoft New Zealand, says the move will provide local organisations with even more assurance that they can take advantage of hyperscale cloud without compromising security and resilience.
“We live in a digital world, and data is even more precious than ever at a time when businesses are now using generative AI and other tools that rely heavily on data to deliver personalised services. It’s no longer about just recovering data if something disrupts your systems – having access to that data and services at all times is a non-negotiable. We’re thrilled to have Veeam, the number one global expert in data resilience, partner with us to ensure that. It gives local organisations the confidence to scale, innovate and modernise without fear, while giving them total control over where their data is stored and backed up.”
Veeam Data Cloud will be available for Microsoft 365 customers in New Zealand via Azure Marketplace or through Veaam’s local partners.
