Vocus to deploy Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 Extreme to satisfy rising bandwidth

Australian telecommunications company Vocus will deploy telecommunications service provider Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) 1.6TB/s coherent technology across its long haul and metro links.

Ciena said this is an industry-first coherent solution which will enable Vocus to benefit from cost-effectiveness and reliability.

“We are at a significant stage in the cloud and artificial intelligence era and WL6e will provide the capacity required for Vocus to meet the needs of new and existing customers looking to thrive in this transformative period,” commented Vocus general manager network engineering Steve Haigh on the deployment.

Ciena’s WL6e will support up to 1.6TB/s single-carrier wavelengths for metro Roadm deployments and 800GB/s-1.2 Tb/s over the longest links.

Ciena claims the WL6e will drive energy efficiency by reducing the pieces of equipment and space needed.

“With the additional network capacity enabled by WL6e, Vocus will solidify its position as a leading carrier providing reliable and cost-effective connectivity across Australia and New Zealand,” said Ciena vice president Asia Pacific Matt Vesperman.

Earlier this week, CommsWire reported that BW Digital’s Hawaiki Australia-US Cable, powered by Ciena’s GeoMesh Extreme submarine network solution, is now offering 400Gbps Ethernet services.

Last October, undersea networks company Subco deployed Ciena’s GeoMesh Extreme technology, powered by WaveLogic 5 Extreme in the 6500 Packet-Optical Platform, to increase the capacity of the Oman Australia Cable (OAC) to a maximum of 48Tb/s, helping support increased bandwidth demands.
