Viettel begins work on Vietnam’s first hyperscale data centre

Vietnamese telecommunications and infrastructure group Viettel has officially broken ground and commenced work on the first hyperscale data centre in Vietnam.

The Viettel High-Tech Data centre & Research and Development Complex at Tan Phu Trung Industrial Park, Cu Chi District, Ho Chi Minh City, will rank among the Top 10 largest hyperscale data centres in Southeast Asia.

The new centre is being developed on a site of nearly 4 hectares, with a designed total capacity of up to 140 MW and approximately 10,000 racks.

"This is Vietnam’s first data centre with a capacity exceeding 100 MW, officially reaching the hyperscale level, comparable to the largest global data centres," Viettel says.

The Tan Phu Trung Data centre features an average rack density of 10kW/rack, which is 2.5 times higher than Vietnam’s current average, and the maximum rack capacity reaches 60kW, which Viettel says supports high-performance computing demands of large-scale AI models and applications.

"To achieve this high-density standard, the centre will implement advanced cooling technologies and AI-powered intelligent management systems developed by Viettel," the telco says.

Phase 1 of the project is expected to be operational in Q1 2026, and the entire project will be completed before 2030.

"The Data centre and High-Tech Research Development project, invested by Viettel and located in Tan Phu Trung Industrial Park, is among the largest of its kind in the region," Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, Mr. Vo Van Hoan, said.

"This event coincides with Ho Chi Minh City’s celebrations of the 50th anniversary of national reunification and our active, determined implementation of Resolution 57 — highlighting the critical role of digital infrastructure and data ecosystems in driving economic growth, enhancing national competitiveness, and achieving sustainable development.

"The launch of a hyperscale data centre in Cu Chi not only has strategic significance for Viettel but also serves as a powerful catalyst for Ho Chi Minh City’s digital infrastructure development, smart city initiatives, and e-government construction.

"It will drive the application of cutting-edge technologies such as AI, 5G networks, cloud computing, IoT, blockchain, cybersecurity, and Big Data, while fostering an innovation ecosystem, upgrading digital human resources, and creating high-value jobs to support the city’s digital economy and society."

Major General Tao Duc Thang, Chairman and CEO of Viettel Group, said the new hyperscale data centre is a strategic piece in the overall digital infrastructure landscape that Viettel is building.

"Viettel’s digital infrastructure includes 15 operational data centres in Hanoi, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, and Binh Duong," Tao Duc Thang said.

"This year alone, we will complete the deployment of 20,000 5G base stations, ensuring 95% coverage across urban residential areas nationwide.

"Together, our high-speed connectivity and hyperscale computing infrastructure will comprehensively serve citizens, businesses, and governments."
